The complex morphology of the occlusal pits and fissures warrants an ideal site for the retention of bacteria and food remnants, rendering proper oral hygiene maintenance difficult. Sealants have been shown to protect the occlusal surfaces, inhibit bacterial growth, and provide a smooth surface, thus increasing the probability that the surface will stay clean.
