Background: Thyroid disorders are the common endocrine disorders in India especially in females. Various nutritional and environmental factors are responsible for the occurrence of thyroid disorders in most part of world. Method: The present study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of thyroid disorders in females in this region of country. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), Free Thyroxine(FT4) and free Triiodothyronine(FT3) were analysed in 600 women of different age groups i.e 16-35, 36-55,56-75 years respectively. The Thyrotropin TSH, serum FT3 and FT4 were analysed using a 3rd generation hormone  analyser AIA360 by TOSHO corporation JAPAN. The laboratory reference value were TSH (0.25 – 5.25 µIU/ml), FT3 (2.0 – 4.0 pg/ml), FT4( 0.7 – 1.7 ng/dl). Results: Of the total 600 women analyzed 17.5% had thyroid dysfunction and 82.5% were euthyroid. 13.7% were hypothyroid (9.83% were subclinical and 3.83% were clinical). 3.83% were hyperthyroid (2.83% were subclinical  and 1.0% were clinical). Maximum number of cases are in the age group of 36-55 years and these were hypothyroid in nature, whereas hyperthyroid cases were relatively more in 56-75 years age group. Conclusion: There is high prevalence of thyroid disorders in females in this region. Most common thyroid disorder is Hypothyroidism especially subclinical cases. These thyroid disorders may be due to some nutritional and environmental factors Because of increased prevalence of thyroid disorders in this region biochemical screening for thyroid disease especially in females is justified so as to prevent the complications associated with this disease.
