Salivary glands tumors are one of the most complex and relatively rare group of lesions encountered in oral pathology practice. Their complexity is attributed to heterogeneity of the cells of origin of these cells. The problem is compounded by the ability of these cells to differentiate and modify into various morphological subtypes resulting in a myriad of histomorphological pattern. This also leads to a frequent overlap of microscopic features among various neoplasms. So there is a need of immunohistochemical analysis in order to classify various salivary gland tumors as well as determining the prognosis. The present article is aimed at reviewing and summarizing the  concept regarding the histogenesis of salivary gland tumors and their relevance in immunohistochemical studies for differentiating between commonly occuring salivary gland tumors.

Key words: Histogenesis, immunohistochemistry, salivary gland tumors
