EVALUATION OF EFFECT OF ALCOHOL AND SMOKING ON MALE INFERTILITY - A CLINICOPATHOLOGIC CORRELATION
Sweta Anand, Pragat Gupta

Background: Infertility is typically defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of unprotected intercourse. It affects 10-15% of all couples. Male infertility refers to a male's inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female. In humans it accounts for 40-50% of infertility. The present study was conducted to evaluate effects of smoking and alcohol on the infertility level in males. Materials & Methods: Subjects were divided into 3 groups of 30 each. Group I (control) - included 30 non smoker and non alcoholic. Group II- included 30 alcoholic but non smoker subjects. Group III- included 30 non alcoholic but smoker subjects. Alcoholics were divided into- Mild- those consuming 40g or less; Moderate- consuming 40-80g; and Heavy- consuming more than 80g per day. Smokers were divided into- Light Smokers- 01-20 cigarettes/day; Moderate Smokers- 21-40 cigarettes/day and Heavy Smokers- 41 and more cigarettes/day. Parameters such as Asthenozoospermia (A), Teratozoospermia (T) and Oligozoospermia (O), were taken into consideration. Results: Group I, group II and group III all had 30 patients each. Maximum patients had of heavy alcohol consumer (11) followed by mild (10) and moderate (9). Maximum patients were seen with A+O combination followed by A and T alone. When compared to group I, maximum males were of A+O+T and A followed by A and A+T. 12 males were light cigarette smokers, 8 were moderate and 10 were heavy cigarette smokers. Maximum males were seen with A alone followed by A+O+T combination. When compared to group I, maximum males were A and A+O+T followed by A and O only. Conclusion: Alcohol intake and smoking both have deleterious effect on the sperm level in males. Deterioration of sperm level in patients was seen in smokers and alcoholics. Hence both should be considered to be the risk factor for infertility in males.
