Probiotics are live microbial feed, which provide benefits to the host. They are a heterogeneous group of nonpathologic bacteria that are functionally defined by their ability to allay inflammation when introduced into the inflamed intestine. They have been used to improve gastrointestinal health and their popularity has prompted increased interest for their role in promotion of oral health also. The purpose of this review was to discuss recent data bearing on the possible ways of reducing signs of gingivitis and periodontitis by probiotics.
