PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY IN CASE OF UNDERNOURISHED CHILDREN RECOVERED FROM UNDERNUTRITION | |

Background- Adults born with a low birth weight due to exposure of the mother at mid gestation to famine during the B Hunger Winter of 1944–1945 have been found to have a 3.2-fold increased occurrence of albuminuria compared to those born with normal birth weight. According to our knowledge, there are no studies of albuminuria in stunted children or children who have recovered from under-nutrition. Materials and method- This cross-sectional study was conducted in a institute with a sample of children (n=80) of both genders, aged between 6 and 16 years, who were assigned to one of the following groups: control (20 girls, 14 boys), those with stunted growth (stunted; 5 girls, 12 boys), underweight children (9 female and 7 male) and children who had recovered from under nutrition (8 female and 5 male) The criteria for inclusion in the groups were based on anthropometric parameters assessed in schools and youth centers in low-income areas of the those in the control group and in the recovered group had body mass index and the undernourished children. Results- It shows anthopometric and socioeconomic data. The stunted group was older than the control and recovered groups, but the mean age was similar to that of the under- weight group. The stunted and underweight groups had significantly lower Height of age and Body mass of age, respectively, than the other two groups. There were no significant differences in the mean of height of age and body mass of age and the values between the control and recovered groups, but the Body mass of age of the recovered group was similar to that of the stunted group. Conclusion- main findings of this study are the low risk of albuminuria among children who have recovered from undernutrition in comparison to their undernourished counterparts, the higher risk of children with stunted growth to develop albuminuria. This last finding indicates the deleterious impact of this type of chronic under-nutrition on kidney and endothelial function. |
