SMEAR LAYER- A MATTER OF CONTROVERSY IN ENDODONTICS- A REVIEW

Smear layer is formed during root canal preparation. It consists of dentin, organic material and mi¬croorganisms that adhere to root canal walls. Smear layer should be removed or retained is controversial. It has both the merits and demerits of retaining the smear layer. Literature in favour of retaining and removing, both has been discussed in this article.
